Historical background (from Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society)
Elijah Toothaker was an early settler in Mountainville. Although the land may have been settled first by a Greenlaw, it was surveyed in Toothaker’s name on Peters' Plan of 1798, by John Peters, Jr. Elijah married Elizabeth Daggett (1769 - 1853) of Vinalhaven on 23 May, 1792. Elijah drowned about 1810. Elizabeth married four more times before dying at age 85. The foundations of two farms remain in the Tennis Preserve.
The Pickering farm was owned by John Pickering, who had fourteen children (twelve by first wife Olive Webb and two by second wife, Maria). The Davis farm was owned by Roswell Davis who had ten children. Son John was living there in 1934. (Note: this must be John Davis who ran the pool room in Stonington in the ’40s.)
